Mohammed says…

I graduated with a BA in Social Anthropology in 2018. I’m a freelance artist, writer and entrepreneur with a background in youth work and the culture sector.

In the past year I’ve participated in two other Create Jobs programmes, gaining experience with events production through the Arts Festival Leaders course at Tate Modern, as well as an insight into the world of museums through the STEP into the Smithsonian programme with Smithsonian Institute, LLDC and Create Jobs. These placements have given me a passion to work in museums and galleries.

As of late, I have also been refining my graphic design skills and have launched my own clothing line which I was inspired to do after a successful garment campaign with Everpress.

I am really enjoyed learning how to plan and deliver exhibitions and schools workshops with UCL Culture as a way of making research and museums more accessible. I also gained a lot from developing my writing, marketing and digital design skills with Foundation for Future London as well as gaining a deeper understanding of how the new developments in East London will affect the community.

What are you doing next?

I will be continuing at Foundation for Future London as a freelancer. I have also been considered for a trustee role at an East London cultural institution. On top of this, I’ll be working as a freelance writer and artist.

What was your highlight of the programme?

Curating and producing my first online exhibition for UCL Culture, Make An Impression II. This was an exhibition of East London schools’ prints which I helped facilitate the workshops for. I’m happy that the project went through and our team overcame the challenges of lockdown.

Describe your experience in one sentence

“During STEP I felt really supported and gained tons of great experience. I feel like I’ve gained a nice foothold into the creative sector”
