The arts have always been an important part of my life. From a young age I was fortunate enough to learn to play instruments, sing and perform in school productions. When it came to applying to university, however, I chose a path that I thought would open more opportunities to me. After graduating with a degree in anthropology, I soon discovered that building a career in the cultural sector is equally as challenging as the creative industries.
For the past year I have been looking and applying for jobs that combine my interests in the arts, culture and history. Whilst I have been lucky to gain positions as a Young Producer with the Bernie Grant Trust and Assistant Producer with SMASHfest, I have also struggled to obtain further, long-term roles.
STEP has been a blessing. The stability of full-time, paid work for a year is something that cannot be taken for granted when you are at the beginning of your career in the arts and cultural heritage sectors. The team at FFL have been incredibly welcoming and open to supporting me to develop skills in my areas of interest. Over the year, I am most looking forward to commissioning an artist and working with community groups on creative projects.
