The arts have always been an important part of my life. From a young age I was fortunate enough to learn to play instruments, sing and perform in school productions. When it came to applying to university, however, I chose a path that I thought would open more opportunities to me. After graduating with a degree in anthropology, I soon discovered that building a career in the cultural sector is equally as challenging as the creative industries.
Whilst I had been lucky to gain positions as a Young Producer with the Bernie Grant Trust and Assistant Producer with SMASHfest UK, I had been struggling to obtain further, long-term roles. STEP has been a blessing in so many unexpected ways. I’ve got the chance to work on a diverse range of projects and discovered job roles I had no idea existed before.
The stability of full-time, paid work for a year is something that cannot be taken for granted when at the beginning of your career – especially so within the context of a global pandemic!
I have felt so supported during my time at both Foundation for Future London and UCL Culture and have had a really diverse but well rounded experience from being a part of both teams. I have also learnt so many new skills and gained experiences that will be so beneficial to my career moving forward.
Beyond STEP, I plan to find more opportunities as a Creative Producer. Having an understanding of grant-making processes, budgeting, comms, marketing and evaluation plus more will help me with this immensely.
I am so grateful to have been part of STEP – to have made some wonderful colleagues and friends along the way. I’ve especially loved working on programmes which support communities in east London and I hope to continue this type of work in the future.
What are you doing next?
UCL have extended my contract so I will be with them until March 2021. I am also working on another creative heritage project.
What was your highlight of the programme?
The highlight of the programme for me has been the opportunity to work with the STEP team on the development of our own creative project.
Describe your experience in one sentence
“Being a part of STEP for the past year has taught me so much about myself and the direction I want to take my career in which I will be forever grateful for!“
